On 27 November 2020 the Australian Government introduced the right for eligible employees to take part of their initial 12 months unpaid parental leave entitlement (UPL) flexibly. On 1 June 2023, the amount of UPL which could be taken flexibly increased from 30 to 100 days. Flexible unpaid parental leave is an exception to the rule that UPL must be taken continuously. It allows employees to take part of their UPL in separate blocks of at least one day, before or after a single continuous UPL period and within 24 months of the date of birth or adoption. Employees may elect to only take flexible unpaid parental leave and nottake any continuous UPL. The  'Quick Facts about Flexible Unpaid Parental Leave (FUPL)'  summarises keyfacts about FUPL.
