NSW Government plans to invest more than $252million to employ an extra 1300 apprentices and trainees in the local government sector across the state have been applauded by the Australian Industry Group.

Ai Group Centre for Education and Training (Ai Group CET) Executive Director Megan Lilly said the investment to train the next generation of skilled labour was “a good initiative all round”, while Ai Group Apprentice and Trainee Centre Head Peter Nolan said it would boost the number of apprentices and trainees in areas where the country needs them.

The program, announced at the weekend, will focus on in-demand trades including electricians, plumbers, engineers, civil construction workers, mechanics and planning cadets.

“It’s pleasing to see the NSW Government putting its money where its mouth is,” Ms Lilly said.

“A total of 1300 public sector apprentices and trainees is a considerable investment, with both individuals and the NSW community benefiting.

“Many young people will be able to get a good start in a job with a strong career pathway.

“Importantly, young people in the regions will get the same opportunity as those in the city.

“It’s a good initiative all round.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the new apprentices and trainees would play a key role in building the homes and communities of the state’s future.

“This investment will also make a big difference in smaller towns and regional communities where fewer pathways for formal training currently exist,” Mr Minns said.

The first batch of apprentices and trainees will start their new careers early next year.
