The interview questions are provided as a guide for employers and may be modified to suit specific requirements. Appropriate questions should be selected based on the selection criteria for the position.

Through the planning of questions, employers can ensure that structured interview techniques are applied, which can produce higher levels of reliability and validity than unstructured interviews (i.e. interviews which are unplanned and involve free flowing conversation). It can also help to reduce bias in the recruitment process.

Many of the questions within the Sample: Interview Questions resource are designed as behavioural type questions (questions which ask candidates to provide a past example or situation and require the applicant to assess their response to the situation), which have shown to have the best predictor of future behaviour.

Where a question has multiple parts, remember to allow sufficient pauses to enable the applicant to respond to each part or use the various parts as probing questions. It is recommended that the interview panel all view and agree on the interview questions in advance to achieve the best outcome.
