Measuring turnover and retention is the first step in analysing how the organisation is performing overall - and in relation to specific groups within it. An examination at multiple levels may indicate the organisation is doing well on average but that there are indications of issues with retention, for example, of staff beyond 5 years’ service or less than 1 years’ service.
Examination of retention can be drilled down to any relevant sub-section of the workforce and may indicate issues for retention with skilled staff, full-time staff, particular departments, technical, trade or professional staff, Gen Y or baby boomer employees, employees with carer responsibilities etc.
Measuring turnover can also tell an organisation a lot about the intentions of remaining staff.
