A smoke free policy is a formal, written document addressing the issues and regulations relating to smoking in the workplace. As this policy is related to Workplace Health and Safety, consultation with the employee group is required prior to implementing a policy
of this nature.  Information on consultation can be found at our Health & Safety Resource Centre. Consultation is valuable for a policy of this nature as it provides employees with an opportunity to provide input, share concerns and generate solutions. The smoke free workplace policy will provide a framework for all staff as to:

  • why the workplace has adopted a smoke free policy;
  • what is covered under the scope of ‘smoking’;
  • the requirements of the organisation and the staff within; and
  • the organisation’s position on smoking in the workplace.
