The Australian Industry Group’s Louise McGrath has been elected to the Board of Standards Australia.

The appointment, announced today, reflects Ai Group’s ongoing contribution to and support of the development of standards in Australia, Ai Group Chief Executive Innes Willox said.

As Head of Industry Development and Policy at Ai Group, Ms McGrath is responsible for the standards and product regulatory team that supports 250 representatives on 350 technical committees.

“With increasing protectionism internationally and a greater focus on decarbonising the economy, I feel it’s the right time for my skills and experience to make a contribution to the future of Standards Australia,” Ms McGrath said.

“My responsibility for Ai Group’s standards engagement with our members has provided insights into how these emerging issues are increasingly impacting standards development.”

Standards Australia Chair of the Board Tracey Gramlick said the appointment would be formally announced at the group’s next Annual General Meeting on November 29.

“We are delighted to welcome Louise to the Board as a Director,” she said.

Ms McGrath has a robust background in industry development, international relations and policy formulation.

Through her role at Ai Group, she has contributed to high-impact national initiatives such as the National AI Centre’s Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence Think Tank and the CSIRO’s Manufacturing Advisory Group.

She also worked with the Australian and New Zealand governments on the CER/TTMRA review that is dealing with issues such as the gradual de-jointing of Australian and NZ standards and the detrimental effect it has had on Australian business.

“Throughout my career, I have also had the opportunity to work on several international projects, collaborating with teams across different countries and cultures,” Ms McGrath said.

“This exposure has enriched my perspective and enhanced my ability to navigate complex global markets.

“Notably, I have advocated for members in Free Trade Agreement Negotiations, particularly in Asia Pacific, where my understanding of standards and non-tariff barriers and digital trade rules informed the final outcomes.

“This international experience has equipped me with a unique understanding of global industry trends and best practices, which I am eager to bring to the Board.”
